The arrester is connected between the cable and the ground, usually in parallel with the device to be protected. The arrester can effectively protect the communication equipment. Once the abnormal voltage occurs, the arrester will act to protect the equipment. When the communication cable or equipment is operating at the normal operating voltage, the arrester will not be effective, to the ground as a circuit breaker. When a high voltage occurs and endangers the insulation of the device to be protected, the arrester acts immediately to direct the high voltage impulse current to the ground to limit the voltage amplitude and protect the insulation of communication cables and devices. When the overvoltage disappears, the arrester quickly restores the original state, so that the communication line can work normally.

   Therefore, the main function of the arrester is to cut the amplitude of the intrusion flow wave through the function of parallel discharge gap or nonlinear resistance, and reduce the overvoltage value of the protected equipment, so as to protect the communication line and equipment.

   Arresters can be used not only to protect against high voltages generated by lightning, but also to protect against high operating voltages.

   The role of lightning arrester is used to protect all kinds of electrical equipment in the power system from lightning overvoltage, operating overvoltage, power frequency transient overvoltage impact and damage to an electrical appliance. The main types of arrester are protection gap, valve type arrester and zinc oxide arrester. The protection gap is mainly used to limit atmospheric overvoltage, and is generally used to protect the incoming line segment of the distribution system, line and substation. Valve type arrester and zinc oxide arrester are used for the protection of substation and power plant. In 500KV and below system, they are mainly used to limit atmospheric overvoltage. In ultra-high voltage system, they will also be used to limit internal overvoltage or backup protection of internal overvoltage.
